Texas Law Enforcement Prepares for DWI, Crime Enforcement During Halloween Weekend

|

Texas authorities and officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) are reminding the public of increased enforcement this Halloween weekend. Due to the historical rise in alcohol-related accidents and other crimes common during the holiday weekend, law enforcement will be focusing an increased presence on looking for and arresting impaired motorists, as well as others who might violate the law.

At Scott H. Palmer, P.C., our criminal defense attorneys have represented numerous clients who were arrested and charged with crimes during periods of increased enforcement, which commonly take place during holiday weekends. They’ll be targeting the following offenses:

  • DWI – With plenty of costume parties and events, many people will be celebrating with alcohol. Those who get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, however, can face serious penalties if arrested. With more officers on the road looking for signs of impaired drivers, TxDPS officials expect a surge in DWI arrests. Penalties for first time offenders are nothing to be taken lightly, and can include possible terms of imprisonment, fines and fees, driver’s license suspension, and other court-ordered requirements. Penalties can be greatly enhanced when aggravating circumstances are involved, including prior DWI convictions, child passengers, and accidents.
  • Theft Offenses – Statistics show that theft crimes see a sharp increase during Halloween, as more people are out and about and homes and vehicles are left unattended. Crimes like burglary and robbery are aggressively prosecuted, and, depending on the circumstances and value of property, can result in lengthy jail or prison sentences.
  • Juvenile Crimes – Halloween brings mischief, especially among youth. During this time of year, authorities see a rise in juvenile arrests for crimes such as underage drinking, drug possession, theft, and vandalism. Parents of a minor facing criminal allegations can protect their child’s future by reaching out immediately for the help of an experienced criminal defense lawyer.
